Due to injuries to his wrist and hamstring, Duke safety Jeremy Cash has been unable to participate in much of the pre-draft process, including the Senior Bowl game and combine workouts. That is, until today, when Cash took the field at Duke’s facilities to go through a full workout for NFL scouts and personnel. Following his performance, Cash took the time to fill me on his results:
40-yard dash: 4.60
Broad jump:10’4
Vertical jump: 34.5
3-cone: 7.13
20-yard shuttle: 4.26
Cash told me the hardest part of his pro day was desiring to put up impressive numbers and prove himself in workouts, but knowing that he wouldn’t be able to perform to the best of his ability.
“I’m about 95 percent. And that’s the biggest reason I couldn’t test as well as I would’ve liked to. Hadn’t trained for any of it, just focused on getting healthy these past few weeks.”
Still, for a player many project will move to linebacker or an exclusive in-the-box role at the next level, Cash tested adequately compared to his peers. Here is how the Duke defender’s workout numbers ranked when matched up against all other safeties at the combine:
40-yard dash: 7th out of 18
Broad jump: T-6th out of 17
Vertical jump: T-10th out of 16
3-cone: 10th out of 13
20-yard shuttle: 8th out of 13
I expected Cash’s 3-cone to be his most disappointing number, and it certainly wasn’t a great result, but considering the amount of time and opportunity the safety had to prepare while nursing an injured hamstring, some discretion is advised.
Still, I see Cash at his best as close to the line of scrimmage as possible, potentially even as a linebacker. I asked the fifth-year senior what position he prefers in the NFL, but, much as he had when I asked him at the Senior Bowl, Cash remained indifferent.
“I personally don’t have a preference nor do I have a label. I think of myself as a versatile player who is ready and willing to line up in any given position and give the team 110% of what I have. Ultimately, no matter where I line up, I plan to be effective and deliver punishing blows.”
